Marvel Announces AVENGING SPIDER-MAN by Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira

13 06 2011

Look at that beautiful artwork. I almost passed out due to its sheer beauty. Art by Joe Madureira.

Yes, you DID read that correctly… THE one and ONLY JOE MADUREIRA will be doing the art for an upcoming Spider-Man montly comic book debuting in November.

Zeb Wells will be responsible for the writing chores. Remember, he’s the guy behind that God awful Lizard story that came out last year where the Lizard fricken ATE HIS OWN SON. So, Zeb Wells has written some of the WORST Spider-Man stories that I’ve ever read, and… JUST LOOK at that art! IT’S SO GORGEOUS!!!

So I guess the premise of this comic is going to be stories of Spider-Man teaming up with the Avengers because apparently we don’t get enough of it in Avengers and New Avengers. Why can’t we call it Marvel Team-Up?

For those who know me well will know that I’m a HUGE fan of Joe Mad’s art. Anything he draws I feel the need to buy just to ABSORB THE AMAZING ART. I’ve even met him at a convention once. (btw Battle Chasers isn’t in his near future unfortunately).

I WILL buy the first issue, price point and not very good writer be darned. If it’s as bad as that Lizard story and each issue is priced at $3.99 for 22 pages of art I WILL drop it even if the art is probably going to be great. Marvel Comics has said that this will be a MONTHLY comic. Now for those who may not know, Joe Mad is a REALLY SLOOOOOOW artist and his books are always late. Unless, he’s gotten a HUGE HEAD START on this project by now or is going to be CHAINED TO A DESK, DRAWING 24/7 I can’t see HOW this is going to be a monthly comic, but we’ll see.

So YES I will buy the first issue and will probably REVIEW it here as well!

Let me know what you guys think of this in the comments section and take care!

Top 25 Selling Comic Books of June 2010! YAY or NAY?

15 07 2010

“I KNEW I shouldn’t have read Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass…”

So let’s take a look at what comic book fans today like:

  1.   New Avengers#1
  2.   Batman#700
  3.   Avengers#2
  4.   Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne#3
  5.   Green Lantern#55
  6.   Brightest Day#3
  7.   Brightest Day#4
  8.   Secret Avengers#2
  9.   Uncanny X-Men#525
  10.   Avengers Prime#1
  11.   Flash#3
  12.   Superman#700
  13.   Green Lantern Corps#49
  14.   X-Men Legacy#237
  15.   Justice League of America#46
  16.   Amazing Spider-Man#634
  17.   Amazing Spider-Man#633
  18.   Captain America#606
  19.   Astonishing X-Men#34
  20.   Thor#611
  21.   Amazing Spider-Man#635
  22.   Green Arrow#1
  23.   New Mutants#14
  24.   Wonder Woman#600
  25.   Captain America#607

Out of all these books on that list I only bought 2 of them: Batman and Wonder Woman. Here is the rest of the books I bought that month and where they stand:

26. Invincible Iron Man#27

41. Invincible Iron Man Annual#1

44. Deadpool#24

45. Shield#2

120. Atlas#2 (Why this book doesn’t sell boggles my mind).

125. Invincible#73 (Another great book that doesn’t sell much).

182. Turf#2 (See my statements above)

This is seriously disappointing. Looking at this list makes me weep for the industry. So in the Top 25, we have: 4 Avenger books, 7 Brightest Day books, and 4 X-books. Not a SINGLE indie book among the Top 25. Pathetic. When I say pathetic I’m talking about the people who only buy DC and/or Marvel. Come on already guys! Expand your horizons! Get out of your little bubbles where only you and your “blockbuster” comics reside and try something NEW.

This month has been unbelievable. It’s been so up-and-down. You get one awesome announcement, then you find out one of your favorite titles is being cancelled, and so on and so forth. There is room for improvement, but it seems as if fanboys don’t want something new. They want the boring same old, same old. I used to be one of these guys. I used to be a total Marvel Zombie. I shunned DC and everybody else when I hadn’t even tried one of their books, but then I heard great reviews of Detective Comics#854, so I decided to give it a try. I did and immediately I was HOOKED on catching up with the goings-on of the DCU and try out other indie books as well. So to all you fanboys out there please try something new. It will make comic collecting so much more fun and enjoyable.

Thanks for bearing with me and I hope you guys share your thoughts by leaving a comment on this post. I look forward to them 24/7!

What I’ve Been Reading: Avengers Edition

12 07 2010

Avengers: Red Zone by Geoff Johns, Olivier Coipel, and Andy Lanning

Hey! What are the Avengers doing? They’re not eating or talking about nothing important! Instead they’re trying to prevent this virus from killing people! I don’t know if I’m comfortable with these Avengers… they’re not eating, so how on earth are they getting their energy? Oh no! They’re not saying any of their played-out funny jokes! Also, there is too little decompression. Too much is happening. I’m gonna go re-read my copy of New Avengers where they’re eating hamburgers to cleanse my mind.

*End sarcasm here*

Avengers Forever by Kurt Busiek, Carlos Pacheco, and Jesus Merino

If you like epic time travel stories then pick this up. Also if you’re a fan of good Avengers stories pick it up as well. I’m only on issue#4, but so far I’m really enjoying it. The art is great and adds an energy to the story. This definitely reads like a Busiek Avengers story, which is not a bad thing at all. Also when the team of Avengers in this story was assembled at the end of issue#1 I was uncertain about if I’d like the team, but as I said earlier I’m only on #4 and I really like the team in this story. Trust me this is a good story. I like Songbird.

Reading these Avengers stories makes Bendis’ Avengers look like a joke. Actually, his Avengers ARE a joke no matter what, but his books sell so they gotta be good right? If you’re as disappointed and embarrassed with Bendis’ Avengers and New Avengers as I am then do yourself a favor and pick these up.
